August 18, 2010 Program
PLEASE NOTE: AFP-WNC LUNCHEON MEETINGS WILL NOW BE HELD AT BROADMOOR GOLF LINKS LOCATED AT EXIT 40 OFF OF INTERSTATE 26 BETWEEN ASHEVILLE AND HENDERSONVILLE.
Topic: Understanding What's Going On with Major Gift Donors
Speakers: Wilson Sims and Tracy Kunkler, Sims & Steele Consulting
If Marvin Gaye were a development professional, he’d still be pondering the question, “what’s going on?”
That’s what we all want to know about the state of philanthropy and fundraising, not only for the third and fourth quarters of 2010, but also looking into 2011. We know that, in the aggregate, giving was off in 2009, and we expect 2010 to be similar. What is ahead on the horizon? What are WNC major donors thinking, and what do they look for in the non-profits they choose to support?
To get answers, Tracy Kunkler and Wilson Sims of Sims & Steele, have reviewed the national research and have interviewed 15 WNC philanthropists to get real data from real people, as Wilson put it recently. They will share with us the questions they posed along with the responses they received. Together, we will discuss the inferences.
Board members and fundraising volunteers are encouraged to consider attending.
“Oh, you know we've got to find a way…to bring some understanding here today.” So, join us in this timely conversation.
Presenters:
Wilson Sims, Jr.
Partner, Sims & Steele Consulting, Asheville, North Carolina
A graduate of The Webb School, UNC Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University Owen School of Management, Wilson first worked with major donors as Development Director at the Webb School in 1978. Over his 23-year consulting career, he has counseled over 100 capital campaigns throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, and has helped non-profits raise more than $300 million for their projects. In today's philanthropic climate, Wilson has focused attention on pre-campaign assessments, alternative fundraising strategies, and intensive prospect evaluation. When it comes to major gift fundraising (as well as organizational planning), Wilson counsels that the essential elements are having an organization grounded in firm values, mission and goals, a capable staff and a strong board. When these align, almost anything is possible. A past president of the Western North Carolina Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), he is currently a "big brother" with Big Brothers Big Sisters, convener of the French Broad Regional Greenway to Marshall and an active volunteer with Carolina Day School and the Webb School, Belt Buckle, Tennessee.
